Recently my grandson shared with me his Christmas wish list. Being a boy, his list included a combination of electronic devices and things that go bang. Reviewing his list reminded me of the list I used to build each year to share with Santa Clause in hopes of receiving as least one of the items on the list. I knew there was no way I would find everything on my list under the tree on Christmas morning, but it was likely I would find at least one treasure from my list.

Listening to my grandson and going down memory lane, caused me to think about what my project management wish list might look like. What project management gifts would I want in my career that would allow me to be most efficient at executing projects? Here they are:

Supportive and Engaged Project Sponsor

Recently I spoke with two of the authors of the book “Strategies for Project Sponsorship

“, Vicki James and Ron Rosenhead (#PMHangout21 and Sensible Project Manager Podcast Episode 009). I walked away from that discussion thinking I was ready to give my project sponsor a hug. Well I am not quite there after all. It would be great to have project sponsors that were fully engaged and supportive of my projects and me as a project manager. Additionally, I would love it if they were fully trained to be a sponsor and that they were supported by the organization.

Exciting Scope of Work

I love it when I have projects that are exciting and interesting. Those types of projects motivate me to come to work each day and immerse myself in the work. I wish that the scope of each and every project I lead contained that ever engaging work.

Excellent Teamwork

Teamwork is the engine that makes a project run smoothly. I wish that each of my future projects had a great team that worked together effectively and efficiently. It is important that the team works together to resolve issues and supports, leverages, and compliments each others strengths. It is also great if they get along well with each other and enjoy each others company.

Efficient Project Processes

I hate to waste time (unless of course it is kicking back and watching a good sporting event) and I especially hate wasting time on stupid and inefficient processes. I wish that each and every process that is defined on the project and most likely by the PMO is efficient and necessary for the effective execution of my project.

Project Tools that Work and Enhance the Project

Often in the past I have had to use project tools that were clunky and were just a pain to work with. I wish that I had in my project tool arsenal the most effective tools that worked efficiently and made my life easier as a project manager, not harder.

Sufficient project resources

If I was putting these wishes in order, this wish might rise near the top. I think every project managers wish was that they would always have the right amount of resources for their project and that these resource were available when they were needed to perform the work at hand.

Satisfied Customers

The ultimate wish for this project manager is to be able to provide great value to my customer. I wish that each project I work on in the future will deliver everything my customer wants and that they are completely satisfied with each and every deliverable that the team produces.

I know that not everyone celebrates Christmas, but we have all wished for that perfect project. I have shared my project management wish list. Please add your wishes to this list and together we will build the ultimate Project Management Wish List. Feel free to share this list with others and have a great holiday season and new year.
