Project Management and the Sunrise

Project Management and the Sunrise

This morning my wife and I watched the sunrise. This wasn’t an accidental occasion. We purposely set the alarm early enough to wake us out of our slumber and wipe away the cobwebs from our minds so we could immerse ourselves in the experience of the awakening of the day. We watched as the tops of the trees were the first ones to greet the sun. We heard the awakening of the birds and their songs greeting the day as the sun light made its way down the trees to blanket the ground with its warmth.

As I have thought of this experience, my mind had to eventually turn to work and the project management profession I have chosen. It occurred to me that the sunrise represents what I love about project management. Just as the sunrise represents the awakening of a new day, a project is the start of a new adventure. I find myself getting bored with repetitious type of work and project work is the solution to that boredom. With projects there is a definite start and finish to the activity and each project is unique.

As a project begins, I find myself engaged in learning about the vision of the project and the value it will deliver to the customer. I thrill in the opportunity to share that vision with each team member and other stakeholders that are involved in the project. As they catch that vision we begin working together to identify the best way to deliver that value. The uniqueness of the solution and the challenges that arise each day as we journey to the finish line, always keeps me engaged.

Although you might find yourself thinking that this analogy is a little over the top or even a little altruistic, think about it and see if you feel the same about working on projects. Is the uniqueness of each project and the belief that you and your team will deliver something of value to the customer, some of the main reasons you enjoy project management. That is what truly keeps me going on each project and why I enjoy project management.

Project Management aside, if you haven’t taken the opportunity to watch the sunrise in a while, I encourage you to add that to the list of things you do on a regular basis. I hope your experience is similar to mine, one that will enrich your life.
