“Advice to New Project Managers” was the topic for the 3rd hangout of the Sensible Project Manager Hangout Community. In this community of project managers and others who enjoy discussing project management topics, we have a weekly hangout which is hosted via Google+ Hangout.  These hangouts are held each Friday at 9:00am pacific time.  Up to 10 people can join the hangout and those not making it to the hangout can view the conversation via Hangouts “On-Air”.

During this hangout there was a technical problem so you will notice an interruption in the middle and at the very end of the hangout.

In this hangout +Mark Phillipy was joined by +Aleem Khan from Toronto and +Mohieddine Saddeh from Lebanon.  During the hangout we shared advice we have for new project managers.

  • Aleem from www.360pmo.com provided the following advice:
    •  Read as much information about project management as you can.  Some great places to read this information is:
      • Internet blog posts and communities
      • PMI Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK)
    • Find a Mentor
    • Network with other project managers as much as possible. Some great places to network are:
      • PMI Local Chapters
      • Internet communities like the Sensible Project Manager Hangout Community.
  • Mohieddine – Pointed out issues he is having due to his company environment.  From this discussion the following advice was discussed.
    • When moving up the ranks into project management, learn your role as project manager and don’t try to keep doing your old job.
    • Learn your role as a project manager
    • Learn to manage up to your management.
    • Build trust with your team.
    • Trust that your team can deliver more value on the project as a team than you can by yourself or the individuals on the team.  Build teamwork.

Feel free to leave a comment on this post adding any additional advice you have for New Project Managers.
