Sensible Project Manager Hangout 11 – Being Agile in a Waterfall World

Being Agile in a Waterfall World

“Being Agile in a Waterfall World” was the topic for the 11th hangout of the Sensible Project Manager Hangout Community. In this community of project managers and others who enjoy discussing project management topics, we have a weekly hangout which is hosted via Google+ Hangout. These hangouts are held each Friday at 9:00am pacific time. Up to 10 people can join the hangout and those not making it to the hangout can view the conversation via Hangouts “On-Air”.

This hangout was a special thought leader hangout and today we were joined by our guest Joseph Flahiff who is the CEO of Whitewater Projects, Inc. During the hangout we discussed what it takes to add agility to traditional or waterfall projects. This week we partnered with #PMChat on the Twitter platform and shared the topic in both the #PMHangout as well as on #PMChat.

I would like to thank all of those who joined me in the hangout:

  • Joseph Flahiff
  • Hala Saleh
  • Ivan Rivera

Often in the world of project management a battle rages of which method to deliver a project is better Agile or the traditional project management via the standard waterfall method. In this hangout we discuss what it means to have agile live in a world of traditional project management.

Joseph proposed “Agile is having the ability to adapt to changes in technology as fast or faster than those changes occur.” This definition ignited some discussion about what additional components make up agile such as changing requirements, people management, organizational change, etc.

When we integrate Agile into a waterfall world, we can do that in two different ways:

  1. Add agility to a traditional waterfall project.
    1. Add retrospectives throughout the project.
      1. Don’t do a lessons learned
    1. Daily Standup Meetings
  1. Add agility to a waterfall business.
    1. Run a standalone agile project within the waterfall environment.
      1. Able to show the benefit of agile on that single project
      2. This will begin to show the organization the value of agile project management.
    1. Highlight the success of agile activities
    2. Work quickly to deliver minimum viable product
    3. Break down project deliveries into smaller components allowing more agility to the environment.
    4. Get over the terminology of Agile vs Waterfall, do what is necessary to deliver more effectively.
