In February 2001 a group of seventeen people got together at the Snowbird ski resort located in the state of Utah in the United States. This software heavy group were looking to identify a better way to deliver solutions quicker to better meet their customer’s needs. The result of this meeting was a Manifesto for Agile Software Development or in short “The Agile Manifesto”.
This 68 word manifesto and its accompanying twelve agile principles are the basis for much of what we understand in most of the agile project management methodologies.
Although agile project management has its origins with the Agile Manifesto, its real roots are based on lean manufacturing principles developed by Toyota as the Toyota Production System (TPS) between 1948 and 1975. There are five key concepts identified by TPS.
As a result of these lean principles and concept, Toyota established themselves as leaders in the automotive industry.
