I say that I am The Sensible Project Manager because I always look for the practical way to manage a project to success. Each project is different, which means that each project will require a unique approach to be successful. In my 17+ years as a project manager I can honestly say I have never managed two projects the same way. I have led hundreds or even thousands of small to large projects and each time I begin a project I open up my project management toolbox and pull out those tools and techniques that best suit that project. Sometimes that means I take a traditional approach to project management and other times an agile approach. The key is to provide the greatest value possible to the customer in the most efficient way.
Who is Mark Phillipy?
As a father of eight children (yes you read that right, 8 kids), I always felt my first project management experience started at home. Trust me…there are a lot of project management lessons gained with raising a family of that size. If it wasn’t for my beautiful bride of 32 years, those lessons would have been insurmountable. Monica is the love of my life. Listen to “7 Ways a Good Project Team is like a Good Marriage” to get an inkling on how I feel about my bride.
Early in my career I realized management kept giving me more and more responsibility followed by opportunities to lead others. Eventually, I began leading others as we worked toward a unified goal to deliver a solution…hey…that’s a project right? That was even before I knew what projects were and project management was.
Does that sound familiar to you? It’s because that is exactly what you are or have experienced.
I love helping others learn about project management or increasing their existing project manager skills. That is why I started SensiblePM…to help you through your project management journey and obtain the PM certification right for you.
Applying Life Lessons to Project Management
As I blog, podcast, and teach I often apply lessons I have learned in everyday life to project management in the hopes that you can relate. Some of the things I enjoy that you will hear me talk about are:
I currently work as the director of Project Management and IT at an exciting lean manufacturing company where I have implemented Kanban and Scrumban as a method of managing projects. I am thrilled to experience this type of agile project management in practice.
I love the outdoors and will relate project management from time to time with hiking, camping, hunting, and a variety of outdoor activities.
I also enjoy all kinds of sports. Two of my favorites are football and wrestling.
The true love of my life is my wife and family. You might hear more about my family and relationships as I teach.
